Kitchen Workflow: The Secret to a Better Kitchen

Why the order of prep, cook, clean and store matters more than cabinet finishes, and how to plan it in an Indian kitchen.

Modular kitchen planned around a clear prep, cook and clean workflow

What is kitchen workflow?

Kitchen workflow is the order in which you move while cooking: take out ingredients, prep, cook, serve, then clean and store. A good kitchen puts these zones next to each other in that sequence, so you walk less and reach less.

In Indian homes with daily cooking, a poor sequence shows up quickly as tired legs, crowded counters and vessels that never have a place.

The five zones to plan

Consumables (pantry and fridge), non-consumables (plates and vessels), cleaning (sink and dishwasher), preparation (clear counter) and cooking (hob and chimney). Keep at least 900 mm of clear counter between the sink and hob for prep.

Store heavy vessels in deep drawers below the hob, spices within one arm’s reach of the hob, and daily plates near the sink or drying area.

Common mistakes

Putting the fridge far from the prep counter, leaving no landing space beside the hob, and choosing too many shutters instead of drawers. Drawers are easier to reach into and use storage depth fully.
